GUARDRAIL – AN INTRODUCTION
The Problem of Road Safety has become very important, primarily because of growing number of vehicles on the road and the high percentage of heavy vehicles. Guardrail is the best mean of traffic safety system found on highways. Guardrail is installed to reduce the severity of run-off-road accidents. This is accomplished by redirecting a vehicle away from embankment slopes or fixed objects and dissipating the energy of the errant vehicle.
 
Guardrail is the best mean of safety on all types of roads, and in particular on embankment, and close to cliffs, bridges & canals medium.
 
The main function of Guardrail is to prevent vehicles from leaving the road or from crossing on to the other carriageway. The metallic structure of the Guardrail must provide a degree of elasticity & deferability capable of absorbing & dissipating the energy induced by impact with the vehicle.
 
 
 
TYPES OF GUARDRAIL
Longitudinal roadside barriers
The longitudinal roadside barriers are basically meant to shield two type of roadside hazards i.e. embankment and roadside obstacles and also preventing the vehicles wearing off the sharp curves.

Median Barriers: -
Head - on - Collision, especially on highways with narrow medians caused by out - of - control vehicles jumping across the medians are a major source of accidents, to avoid these accidents Median Barriers are used.
 
Type of Median Barriers: -
‘W’ Beam type steel barriers.
Thrie Beam type steel barrier
 
W – Beam Guardrail has two “Humps” and one “Valley”. Humps are rises that face towards the traffic, while the valley points away from the traffic. The ‘W’ Beam type safety barrier consists of a steel post and a 3 mm thick ‘W’ beam rail element which is spaced from the posts. The spacer minimizes vehicular snagging and reduces the likelihood of a vehicle vaulting over the barrier. The steel post and the blocking out spacer shall both be channel section of 75 x 150 mm size 5 mm thick. The rail shall be 700 to 750 mm above the ground level and posts shall be spaced 1.5, 1.9 to 2 mtrs center to center as per site condition.
 
The Thrie Beam Guardrail has three “Humps” and two “Valley”. Thrie beam safety barrier shall have posts and spacers similar to the ones mentioned above for ‘W’ Beam.
 
GUARDRAIL – SPECIFICATION
W – Beam (profile)
The Guard Rail Beam is a ‘W’ profiled corrugated beam of 4318/4124 mm long made out of steel strip of 3/2.67 mm thick having minimum yield strength of 345 N/mm2. The beam shall have a formed width of 312 mm & depth of corrugation as 83 mm for W beam and 515 mm for thrie beam.
 
All the beams are hot dip galvanized and having a mass of zinc coating as 550 Gm/Sqm at any single point.

The Guard Rail Post consists of Post of size 150 x 75 x 5 mm. The Total length of the post shall varies depending on the site requirements generally the length of the post is 1250 to 1900 mm long and is embedded in concrete for a length of 500 to 1150 mm thus making the height of the post above concrete foundation as 750 to 800 mm for W beam.
 
All the posts are hot dip galvanized and having a mass of zinc coating as 550 Gm/Sqm at any single point.

SPACER CHANNEL
The Spacer channels or brackets are made of steel channel sections 150 x 75 x 5 mm. The length of the spacer channel is 330 mm long for W beam and 535 mm for thrie beam.
 
All the spacer channels are hot dip galvanized and having a mass of zinc coating as 550 Gm/Sqm.
